Accessible Portable Restrooms Start With the Route

An accessible portable restroom is not useful if a guest cannot reach it comfortably. Plan the unit and the approach together: the route, surface, slope, width, turning space, visibility, and relationship to parking or the main event area all matter. This page offers planning guidance, not a substitute for reviewing the rules that apply to your venue or project.

Start with your site details

Map the complete approach

Walk the route from the most likely arrival point. Look for loose gravel, mud, abrupt edges, standing water, steep transitions, cords, fencing, and stored equipment. A firm, reasonably level path with adequate clearance is easier to navigate and easier for event staff to keep clear.

Make accessibility visible and practical

Place the accessible unit where it can be found without forcing a guest through a crowded queue or hazardous work zone. Keep it connected to the main circulation plan, but do not treat it as a remote add-on.

Consider weather and surface changes

Snow, rain, irrigation, dust, and heat can change the usability of an outdoor route. Review the forecast and the property’s drainage or shade conditions.

Coordinate with the rest of the site

Accessibility works best when it is part of the entire plan, including parking, entrances, seating, food service, and handwashing.
